Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab Initiates Close-Race Audit
Wednesday, November 4, 2026
TOPEKA – Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab announced that a close-race audit has been initiated for six races following the November 3 general election.
Under K.S.A. 25-3009, a close-race audit is triggered when unofficial election results reported on election night show a race decided by 1% or less of the total votes cast. The audit involves reviewing ballots in 10% of precincts in each county for the selected race. It is conducted in addition to the routine post-election audit, with at least one precinct audited in each county.
The following race(s) qualify for a close-race audit:
- Governor
- Kansas Secretary of State
- Attorney General
- Kansas House of Representatives District 27
- Kansas House of Representatives District 40
- Kansas House of Representatives District 117
Close-race audits are conducted by the county election officials and require a hand count of the selected ballots. The hand count is then compared with the results produced by the voting tabulators to verify that the totals match.
Close-race audits apply to elections for federal, statewide and state legislative offices.
