The successful applicant should: 1) develop an in-depth understanding of the intricacies of Election Administration; 2) have management experience including the ability to supervise, mentor and motivate staff; 3) possess a good work ethic including the ability to provide exceptional customer service; and 4) possess strong leadership qualities including the ability to consider creative solutions to issues, maintain a high level of enthusiasm, and actively foster a team-based approach.


Work Examples

1.      Management

        Oversee daily functions of the Sedgwick County Election Commissionerís office.

        Manage, monitor, and motivate employees

        Prepare annual budget (over $900,000 per year)

        Review current and develop new systems/procedures, for the administration of elections and operation of the office


2.      Election Administration

        Give notice of elections by publication in the official county paper, at least fifteen (15) days before the holding of any election

        Publish notice of all persons seeking national and state offices

        Prepare ballots for all elections within the county, including: cities, school districts, townships, or drainage districts located in the county

        Serve as clerk of the court for contested elections

        Secure polling places

        Establish the boundaries of wards and precincts within the county

        Provide for appropriate maintenance and storage of voting machines and surrounding facilities

        Recruit and train polling place board workers

        Provide for advanced voting

        Prepare voter lists

        Prepare for internet access to election results

        Tabulate election results and reports

        Prepare certificates of nomination and/or election

        Conduct canvass with county commissioners


3.      Leadership Duties

        Provide a strong leadership example to staff and contribute to the development of the office goals

        Encourage growth and development of staff through mentoring and coaching

        Asses training needs and assist with development of training programs

        Develop relationships and partnerships with the Kansas Secretary of Stateís office, local agencies, as well as customers


Job Requirements

        College degree from accredited 4 year university

        Exceptional supervisory skills (experience required)

        Exceptional verbal and written communication skills


Necessary Skills

        Proficient in managing projects

        Ability to comprehend, use and apply advanced technology

        Ability to serve as a visionary for the administration of elections and the office as a whole

        Accomplished team player able to build relationships within and outside the agency

        Capable of providing motivation and leadership


Salary Range

$58,000 to $64,000 per year
