THORNBURGH CONCLUDES CANDIDATE FILING PERIOD
TOPEKA, KS – Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh struck the gavel at noon today, officially concluding the filing period for United States Senate and House of Representatives, Kansas Senate and House of Representatives, even-numbered State Board of Education members, elected judicial, county, and township offices and precinct committeeman and committeewoman for the August 5, 2008 primary.
In total, 350 individuals – including 154 Democrats and 196 Republicans – have filed to run for a state-level office. This number is down from 2004 (the last time the entire legislative body was on the ballot), when 369 candidates filed for the primary election. Additionally, 24 Senate and 73 House primary races (of 80 and 250, respectively) will be contested.
