THORNBURGH ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF MERRIMAN
TO ELECTION ASSISTANCE COMMISSION STANDARDS BOARD
Topeka, KS Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh today announced
the appointment of Don Merriman, Saline County Clerk, to the Election Assistance
Commission Standards Board.
I look forward to working with Don on the board as we move forward with
implementing federal election reform, stated Thornburgh. Don is
extremely knowledgeable about election reform and will represent our state well.
The Help America Vote Act of 2002 requires the establishment and organization
of a commission to oversee federal election reform. The commission includes
an Election Assistance Commission Standards Board composed of 110 members
55 state election officials and 55 local election officials.
Kansas will be represented on the standards board by Thornburgh and Merriman.
As members of the board, Thornburgh and Merriman will play a vital role in the
implementation of federal election reform by reviewing voluntary voting system
guidelines and providing guidance on uniform and non-discriminatory election
technology and administration.
Merriman has served as Saline County Clerk since January 2000. He attended
two years of the County Clerk Certification program administered by Wichita
State and the Kansas County Clerks and Election Officials Association.
