THORNBURGH WILL WORK TO PRESERVE
TUESDAY, AUGUST 6 PRIMARY ELECTION DATE
Topeka, Ks - Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh today stated, “I will work to preserve the Tuesday,
August 6 primary election date. This is difficult due to the recent ruling by the federal court to move
the filing deadline for United States House of Representatives to July 9 at 5 p.m. I believe it is important
to keep the current primary date to prevent confusion among voters.”
“We will ask the court to expedite the process,” Thornburgh said. “My office is currently reviewing
our election administration calendar to determine how the new filing deadline will affect our ability
to conduct an election on August 6. I hope to have a revised calendar in place later this week. We are
required by federal and state law to meet certain deadlines pertaining to overseas military ballots,
advance ballots and notification to the public of the election. We will ask the court to consider these
deadlines when making their final ruling.”
